The higher the blood sugar levels, the greater the risk.<\/p><ul data-start=\"1801\" data-end=\"2127\"><li data-start=\"1801\" data-end=\"1894\"><p data-start=\"1803\" data-end=\"1894\">Simple glucose measurements fluctuate with food intake and are not reliable on their own.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1895\" data-end=\"2034\"><p data-start=\"1897\" data-end=\"2034\"><strong data-start=\"1897\" data-end=\"1928\">Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c)<\/strong> provides the average blood sugar level over the previous 3 months and should ideally remain below 6.3%.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"2035\" data-end=\"2127\"><p data-start=\"2037\" data-end=\"2127\">Additional risk factors include <strong data-start=\"2069\" data-end=\"2124\">hypertension, high cholesterol, anemia, and smoking<\/strong>.<\/p><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b39893d elementor-widget elementor-widget-menu-anchor\" data-id=\"b39893d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"menu-anchor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-menu-anchor\" id=\"giati-to-xrisimopioume\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b1f7734 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"b1f7734\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What are the symptoms?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4acb198 elementor-widget-laptop__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4acb198\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"2129\" data-end=\"2258\">In the <strong data-start=\"2151\" data-end=\"2167\">early stages<\/strong>, diabetic retinopathy is usually <strong data-start=\"2201\" data-end=\"2217\">asymptomatic<\/strong>, even when the disease is progressing.<\/p><ul data-start=\"2259\" data-end=\"3292\"><li data-start=\"2259\" data-end=\"2429\"><p data-start=\"2261\" data-end=\"2429\">Fluid leakage from microaneurysms can cause localized or generalized retinal edema, particularly <strong data-start=\"2358\" data-end=\"2375\">macular edema<\/strong>, the most common cause of vision loss in diabetics.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"2430\" data-end=\"2579\"><p data-start=\"2432\" data-end=\"2579\">Vision may fluctuate with blood sugar levels; high glucose causes lens swelling (osmotic effect), leading to temporary myopia and blurred vision.<\/p><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b60313a elementor-widget-laptop__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b60313a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li data-start=\"2580\" data-end=\"2895\"><p data-start=\"2582\" data-end=\"2671\">In advanced proliferative retinopathy, fragile new vessels may bleed into the vitreous.<\/p><ul data-start=\"2674\" data-end=\"2895\"><li data-start=\"2674\" data-end=\"2816\"><p data-start=\"2676\" data-end=\"2816\">Small hemorrhages appear as moving black spots, thread-like structures, or spider webs (especially noticeable against bright backgrounds).<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"2819\" data-end=\"2895\"><p data-start=\"2821\" data-end=\"2895\">Larger hemorrhages may cause dark scotomas or even complete vision loss.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li data-start=\"2896\" data-end=\"3111\"><p data-start=\"2898\" data-end=\"3111\">Importantly, <strong data-start=\"2911\" data-end=\"2947\">diabetic retinopathy is painless<\/strong>. The exception is <strong data-start=\"2966\" data-end=\"2990\">neovascular glaucoma<\/strong>, a rare but severe complication in which high intraocular pressure causes intense eye pain, photophobia, and vomiting.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"3112\" data-end=\"3292\"><p data-start=\"3114\" data-end=\"3292\">In very advanced cases, scar tissue can contract and cause <strong data-start=\"3173\" data-end=\"3195\">retinal detachment<\/strong>, which may result in permanent vision loss if the macula is affected and not treated
