Orbital Fractures

Orbit is one of the most common areas affected in case of facial trauma. Trauma can result in fracture of the bones surrounding the eye. Thus, orbital fracture is the condition in which one or more bones around the eye are broken. This may include the ground of the orbit, the roof of the orbit, the outer side wall or the inner side wall of the orbit. The orbit is the bony cavity in which the eye is located, the muscles that move it and the fat.

What are the symptoms?

A orbital fracture causes asymmetry in the face. The eye may have been injured too.
There may also be swollen eyelids, eye pain, double vision (seeing doubles), due to the fact that the eye has subsided and trapped, while it may lose vision, bruise – bruise in the periocular area, enophthalmos (eye dent), numbness of the upper teeth and reduced mobility of the side of the fracture.
The diagnosis is based on the ophthalmological examination, and if there is clinical suspicion with the above symptoms, we should proceed to Orbital Computed Tomography (CT).

In the photos you see after a fracture of the orbital ground of the left eye an enophthalmic image (left eye dent) and limited mobility of the left eye, due to entrapment of the lower rectum muscle in the broken ground. The patient who was attacked by thieves, who were not politicians, shows at such a point double vision (he sees them twice) that he can not drive.

How is it corrected?

Orbital fractures can be corrected through a minimal incision, not visible, through the inside of the eyelid (through the conjunctiva). If muscles are trapped in the broken bones, they are released and a special sheet of thin material is placed that supports the eye and the wall of the orbit.
Orbital injuries are relatively common due to traffic accidents in our country and increased crime.
The effects on eye function and facial aesthetics are significant.
With proper preoperative control and personalized care, a solution to these difficult problems is offered.
