Epiretinal membrane

The macula is the center of the retina and is responsible for sharp vision.

The epiretinal membrane is a very thin membrane formed on the macula of the retina and occurs in about 7% of the population.

How is the epiretinal membrane created?

With the passing of age, the gel of the eye, called vitreous, shrinks and detaches from the retina. Usually, the vitreous is detached without any problem. Sometimes, the vitreous can stick to the retina. Scar tissue is created, resulting in the development of the membrane that creates wrinkling of the retina and the macula.

Age is the most common factor. Other causes may be trauma or internal swelling of the eye. The formation of the epiretinal membrane may in other cases be associated with previous intravitreal hemorrhages or inflammations or with previous tear and/or retinal detachment.

In several cases where there is no obvious cause is called idiopathic.

What symptoms does the epiretinal membrane cause?

When the epiretinal membrane exerts traction and deforms the macula, it affects vision significantly and especially in reading.

It also causes metamorphopsia,  characteristic deformations of lines, which appear wavy or warped from straight lines.

An essential element of any surgical procedure, especially cosmetic surgery, is providing the patient with sufficient time for information.

How is the epiretinal membrane treated?

Its removal is performed only surgically and is recommended when vision deteriorates significantly to the point that affects the patient’s quality of life. The operation is called vitrectomy performed under local or general anesthesia and involves the removal of the gel of the eye and then the removal of the membrane from the retina. The gel removed is replaced by a special gas that is absorbed by itself in a few weeks.
