Macular Hole

A macular hole is a rupture in the retina, located in the macula area.

What are the symptoms of a macular hole?

The main symptoms of this condition include distortion of objects and, later, the loss of central vision, which manifests as a central scotoma (a blind spot in the center of the visual field).

What is the cause of a macular hole?

The primary cause of this condition is traction exerted by the vitreous body on the retinal layer, specifically in the area around the macula. Traction can also result from membranes that develop on the retina (epiretinal membrane) or from adhesions between the vitreous and the retina (vitreoretinal traction).

Risk factors for the development of a macular hole include:

  • High myopia
  • Macular edema
  • Vitreous inflammation
  • Retinal inflammation
  • Eye trauma

An essential element of any surgical procedure, especially cosmetic surgery, is providing the patient with sufficient time for information.

How is a Macular Hole Diagnosed?

The diagnosis is made through a relevant examination using Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and a clinical exam known as fundoscopy, which is performed after pupil dilation (mydriasis). In the OCT, the loss of retinal layers is observed.

How is a Macular Hole Treated?

The treatment for a macular hole requires a vitrectomy, which is a surgical procedure in which the vitreous body (the gel inside the eye) is removed endoscopically.
